Day 2: Lunch

Freak of nature: Spaghetti and meatball on a stick.

Day 2: Lunch

Spaghetti and meatballs on a stick -- weird.
It doesn't taste bad, mind you. I like the sauce, parmesan cheese and fennel-laced meat.
But it's weird in the God-didn't-mean-for-such-things-to-be-on-a-stick kind of way.

Whoever makes the thing stuck bits of cooked spaghetti into a meatball. (It actually looks more like a piece of link sausage.) They dipped in a bread batter and deep-fried it. The stand serves it up in spaghetti sauce with optional parmesan cheese.

Because of the breadiness -- Oodles owner Craig Kroonblawd says it's spiced to resemble Italian bread -- it's not greasy. (Thank God.)

But the breading tastes oddly like stuffing to me. An Italian Thanksgiving? Seems more like an East Coast thing.

All in all, though, the tennis-ball-size meal isn't bad. It's definitely a conversation piece for fairgoers. If I were Kroonblawd, however, I'd try to stick with just the sausage.

One year at the Santa Clara County fair, Allyson and I had polish sausage that was deep fried like a corn dog, talk about cholesterol.

See if they have the deep fried Oreos, those were hot at the California State Fair some years back.

You are really gonna have fried fair funk going after this thing is over.

Here in Hawaii some folks actually deep fry vienna sausage!

Tim (your brother in law) in Hawaii.
